True to the old adage that a club to an Englishman is his second house, within four years after the founding of Jesselton in the British North Borneo the Governor constituted the Sports Club in Jesselton as vehicle for introduction and promotion of both indoor and outdoor sports and game; and as a venue for social activities. The club as institution grew with the town over the years, adapted to social, economic, and political changes, managed to resist the destructive passages of time and merged as the second oldest club in Sabah after the Sandakan Recreation Club. The founding of the club can be traced to the founding of Jesselton.
